The medical weight loss clinic run by specialist doctors

FAQ'S

We understand that our patients may have some questions about how the process works, what’s involved and the weight loss pens themselves, which is why we have put together a list of the most frequently asked questions which prove most valuable to our patients.

Safety and supervision are the key benefits of The Reduce Clinic and that starts with a full assessment by an experienced doctor to ensure it does not interfere with other medication you may be taking such as digoxin or warfarin and to ensure important safety advice regarding contraception is given if required.

We know that weight loss is more successful if there is support and advice in person face-to-face. We also know that when using any specialist medication, outcomes are better if good relationships are established with health professionals. So, speaking to a doctor or specialist nurse will allow any fear or concerns about the medication or any issues about how to inject to be addressed from both sides and monitored safely.

It is a GLP-1 and GIP agonist which reduces appetite and craving and slows down the rate of food leaving the stomach so you feel fuller longer leading to significant weight loss.

It is taken by injection in weekly doses. It comes in pens each containing 4 weekly doses.

The medication is well tolerated by the majority of patients. The commonest side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation.

It should not be given to anyone with a BMI of less than 27 and female patients should not get pregnant within 4 weeks of starting it or increasing the dose. Caution needs to be taken in patients with a history of gallstones, pancreatitis and some cancers.

As GLP-1 agonists are used to treat diabetes it may add to the effect of diabetic medication and we would avoid prescribing it in the clinic for patients with diabetes, however at The Reduce clinic we would be happy to offer assessment and advice from our specialist dietitians or psychotherapists for people with diabetes.

Excessive alcohol should be avoided as this can lower the blood sugar levels which may be exacerbated on this medication. Also, the gastric side effects may be aggravated by too much alcohol and caffeine.

Our trained nurses will clearly demonstrate the use of the pen and can perform and supervise all the injections if required.

In the fridge, it can be stored for 30 days but at room temperature we would recommend no more than 21 days.

Yes, but it is sensible to keep them refrigerated once they arrive (see above).

Trials show that after 36 weeks patients lost an average of 20% of their body weight. This can translate to a reduction in waist size of up to 8 inches.

We have a pharmacist, dietitians and psychotherapists to assist you on your journey.

Extensive trials show the most weight is lost in the first 6-9 months however weight loss continued beyond this period.

We think it is good practice for us to let your family doctor know that you are on new medication however we will only inform them with your permission.
