The Reduce Clinic Psychotherapy Service

We want to explain what you can expect as you begin your journey with our weight management psychotherapy service. Our goal is to support you in developing a healthier relationship with food, your body, and yourself.

What is Weight Management Psychotherapy?

Weight management psychotherapy is a specialised form of therapy aimed at helping you understand the psychological and emotional factors that affect your eating habits, body image, and overall relationship with food. It is not just about losing weight but about understanding the underlying issues that may contribute to weight gain or difficulties in managing weight.

What to Expect in Therapy

Therapy sessions last around 50 minutes and are usually arranged on a weekly basis.

1. Initial Assessment

Purpose: To understand your history, concerns, and goals.

What Happens: Your therapist will ask you about your eating habits, relationship with food, weight history, mental health, and any previous attempts at weight management. This helps in creating a personalised treatment plan.

2. Setting Goals

Purpose: To establish realistic and meaningful objectives.

What Happens: Together with your therapist, you will set specific goals that align with your overall well-being, not just focusing on weight loss but also on improving your mental health, self-esteem, and lifestyle.

Depending on your goals some (but not necessarily all) of the following will be explored…

3. Exploring Emotional Eating (if relevant)

Purpose: To identify and understand triggers for emotional eating.

What Happens: You will explore the emotions, situations, and thoughts that lead to overeating or unhealthy food choices. Techniques like journaling, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioural and or compassion focused approaches might be introduced to help manage these triggers.

4. Body Image Work

Purpose: To foster a more positive body image and self-acceptance.

What Happens: Therapy will address how you perceive your body and work on improving self-esteem and body acceptance. This might include developing a more compassionate relationship with your body, exploring and reframing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs.

5. Behavioural Strategies

Purpose: To develop healthier eating habits and coping mechanisms.

What Happens: You will learn practical strategies to manage cravings, portion sizes, and to build a more balanced relationship with food. This might include setting up meal plans, learning about mindful eating, and developing healthier routines.

6. Addressing Underlying Issues

Purpose: To resolve psychological issues that impact weight management.

What Happens: Therapy might explore past trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, or other psychological factors that contribute to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Addressing these issues can help in achieving long-term success.

7. Developing Long-Term Coping Skills

Purpose: To ensure sustainable changes.

What Happens: The focus will be on developing skills and strategies that you can use in the long term to maintain a healthy relationship with food and your body, preventing relapse into unhelpful patterns.

8. Regular Review and Adaptation

Purpose: To adjust your treatment plan as needed.

What Happens: Throughout therapy, your progress will be regularly reviewed, and your plan will be adapted based on what is working well and what needs more attention.
